Life news

Just a quick update on the whirlwind that is my life:

My mother is slowly recovering from her cancer surgery, which removed her entire lung. At this point, she's not planning to undergo chemotherapy, which would normally be recommended for her type and stage of cancer, after seeing what my father went through with chemotherapy just before he died in 2005. I wish she'd try it, but I do understand and respect her choice.

In happier news, I accepted an offer for a new job last week. 5/25 is my last day at the current place, and I start at the new place 5/29. I think it'll be a good fit for me. I like the people, and on paper at least it looks like the best match for my skills and interests I've yet found. The only downsides I can see so far are a longer commute and somewhat dressier dress code.

We're still settling into our new place, and I'm finding my way into my new novel. Both unpacking and writing are going in fits and starts.

Susan~

I followed your link from the Beau Monde. I am saddened to hear about your mother. I trained to be an OCN, but abandoned that career track when I nursed my own mother through pancreatic ca. I began to write romance fiction (as a diversion from grief) after that. When all was said and done I went to work in the pharmaceutical industry instead, and been here ever since (in Oncology, for the most part).
By mother, I mean my paternal grandmother, who raised me. Uh, I say this because you may have met my mother (bio-mom) at National in Atlanta (don't recall if you did).

Anyway, this is a nice blog. So clever to figure out how to get your LibraryThing books to list to the left. I'm completely lame in computer skillsets.

Good luck with your new job and your new wip.

Cathy--

Thanks for the good wishes and the compliments on my blog. The LibraryThing tool is fairly simple--LibraryThing itself created the blog widget, and I just pasted into the set-up page on Blogger. One of these days I'll have my husband (a web developer/manager) set me up with something more personalized, but this blog suits my needs for now.

My mom has stage 3 adenocarcinoma. She was never a smoker herself, but had pretty extensive exposure to secondhand smoke, and lives in a part of the country with terrible air. Alabama has no emissions regulations for cars/trucks, and the valleys in and around Birmingham just trap the pollutants. She seems to be recovering well from the surgery, and the surgeon thinks he got all the cancer, but I don't know how long she can expect to go without recurrence if she doesn't have chemotherapy.

Susan, I'm so sorry to read about your mother. The chemotherapy (to undergo or not to) seems like a quality-of-life to her.

I've been following your Beau Monde messages with a lot of interest. Kudos on the great thoughts!

And a huge congratulations to you on your new job.

Thanks, Keira. And avoiding chemo is definitely a quality-of-life issue for my mom. She's been through so much already this year, since in January before we had any inkling of the cancer she had hip replacement surgery. I think she just doesn't feel up to any other major medical interventions any time in the near future.
